A Hundred Days Of This - Day 82
Whenever a cricket tournament is around, the advertisement aficionado in me wakes up. I am one of those people who does not skip ads on YouTube or change channels on the TV. It all started with the famous "Boost is the secret of my energy" for me. From Dravid shaving with a Gillette razor to ZooZoos to Dhoni singing Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi on an ebike, there is something about these ads that I cannot get enough of. Do not even get me started on the Cred campaigns.
Maybe it is the weird (no hard feelings) Swedish ads I see on YouTube that have zero relevance and recall value, I have come to appreciate the entire marketing and advertising industry that we have in India. I still remember how I used to fish through SlideShare for posters and ad clippings to prepare my sets for business quizzes in college. Steve Waugh, Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar featured in a campaign for MRF Tyres and that feels like it happened yesterday. Yeah, I am that old now.
Men's T20I World Cup has begun and boy, no one was ready to see Australia lose to Zimbabwe today. There have been a couple of exciting matches in the past week. My social media feeds are filled with sports and I could not be happier! Just the other day I came across an ad from Apollo Tyres and was wondering who the hell was chopping onions. It was so wholesome and instantly won my heart. CP Plus too is doing an amazing series on Bangalore that made me pine for that place again.
Today I was reading about how narratives can help businesses penetrate and grow in markets (which have to be backed by strong numbers, of course) and could not help but think of how smart was of it of the Scotland cricket team who posed with 5Star bars with the caption - do nothing. Because they literally did nothing to qualify for the World Cup! These are the little things that add some spark to my life. After all, this is exactly the purpose of every human being, right, telling stories. And most importantly telling them well. The legend Late Piyush Pandey would agree.
This is my love letter for all those copy writers and creative heads who try really hard (specially, the ones working for Nescafe, Badal Apni Raftaar is a personal favorite) to fit the whole world in just a few seconds. In case, you too love marketing and advertising, do pick up Nawabs, Nudes and Noodles by Ambi Parameswaran which offers a great trip down the nostalgic lanes for every 90s kid.

And that's Day 82 for you!
